Hidden Signs Of Roof Damage

Roof damage doesn't always stare you in the face; it is not always about missing or cracked shingles. There are hidden signs of the roof that you may not notice if you are not looking for them. Here are a few examples of such hidden signs:

Sections of the Roof Are Discolored

There are many causes of roof discoloration so you shouldn't automatically assume that your roof is damaged if it is discolored. However, asphalt shingles often become discolored when they lose their protective granules. The loss of the granules expose the shingles to weather-related damage such that caused by UV radiation from the sun or hailstones. Therefore, if this is the case, then it means damage has already occurred or is about to occur.

You Can See Sunlight in Your Attic

Any space that allows sunlight to pass through the roof will also allow water to pass through. Even the slimmest rays or sunlight through the roof indicate significantly large openings as far as roof leaks are concerned. Therefore, know that your roof is leaking if you can see sunlight when you go up in the attic.

Animals Are Frequenting Your Roof

Seeing animals one or two times on your roof should not be a cause for alarm. However, if animals are frequenting your roof, you should suspect that they have identified a hole or holes in the roof. The animals will use the holes to get into the roof to nest, chew on the roof materials or just play.

There Is a Whistling Sound in Your House

Whistling sounds on the roof are usually caused by wind squeezing through tiny holes or small cuts. Some of these openings may even be too small for your naked eyes to notice. However, the tiny sizes of air molecules mean they can pass through the tiniest openings possible on your roof.

You Are Witnessing Unexplained High Energy Bills

Lastly, your roof may also be harboring hidden damage if your electricity bill has been rising in the recent past. Again, don't jump to conclusions because there are other possible causes of unexplained hike in electricity bill; for example, it might be that the heating or air conditioner system is malfunctioning. However, if you have ruled out other possible causes of the rise in electricity usage, it might be that the roof is not properly sealed.

You need to pay keen attention to the roof if you are to sport these hidden signs and storm the damage before it worsens. Consult a roofer for a professional diagnosis whenever you suspect a damage on the roof.
