The Problems You'll Run Into With Asphalt Shingles

Have a home that uses asphalt shingles for roofing material? If so, you'll likely run into a problem at some point that requires repair. Here are a few problems you need to be aware of so you know what to look for.

Ripped Shingles

Asphalt shingles can be damaged quite easily in extreme weather conditions. A common problem involves shingles that rip in half due to strong winds. It can leave a partial shingle on your roof, which may not be noticeable at first, but will eventually allow water to get into your home. Thankfully, these individual shingles can be replaced with new ones to provide full protection to the roof.

Missing Granules

Extreme weather can also lead to missing granules. You'll not notice this problem by looking at the shingles on the ground, but you will notice it in other places. Your downspouts may have a collection of small granules at the bottom, which is from all of the granules washing off the shingles and going into the gutters. You can also tell if shingles are damaged by looking at them up close and looking for places where it is smooth instead of bumpy.

Curing

Curling is a problem that is related to moisture. When moisture gets into the single material and is removed by evaporating, the shingle can dry out and start to curl upward. This can create a surface that is easier for wind and rain to get underneath, which will cause damage to your roof in the process. Curling shingles cannot be fixed, so you'll need extra shingles on hand to replace them.

Algae

It is possible for algae to grow on the surface of the roof under the right conditions. If moisture gets trapped underneath debris, the dark and moist environment can be perfect for growing algae. You'll need to remove the algae and clean it off with a brush, and hope that the algae did not cause discoloration.

Old Age

Asphalt shingles will get to a point where they are too old to remain on your home. The standard 3-tab asphalt shingle will last for a few years. If the roof is reaching that age, you may be due for roof replacement.
